Reactions to Mission Possible

A powerful manifesto for a healthier India. This book exposes the deep disparities in healthcare and offers practical solutions for achieving Universal Health Coverage. A must-read for anyone concerned about India’s future. - Ravi Venkatesan, Ex-Chairman - Microsoft India, Social Entrepreneur, Author

The authors make a case for taking a “whole ecosystem” approach to designing a Universal Health Coverage system. They also provide a wide range of solution components that could be integrated to build the system. The ideas are ambitious. But nothing short of this can deliver quality healthcare to 1.4 billion Indians in an equitable way and achieve the goal of Health and Wellbeing for All. - Dr Soumya Swaminathan, Chairperson, M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation

Incisive and bold, this book reimagines healthcare if we are to achieve Universal Health Coverage in India. There are many interesting ideas here, some of them challenging conventional wisdom, making the book a valuable read, not only for policymakers but all those concerned about ensuring the health of all Indians. - Dr Girija Vaidyanathan, IAS (Rtd), Former Chief Secretary and Health Secretary, Government of Tamil Nadu

“Mission Possible” makes a strong and persuasive argument for Universal Health Care based on the foundations of a resilient and strong primary health care system. Written in an easily understandable style without needless data and jargon, the book provides several suggestions as to how India might consider different models for ensuring efficient and affordable health care within a mixed system of delivery where both public and private sector work together. The message that only a dominant tax based financing with government as the lead stakeholder can ensure an inclusive and equitable system of care comes out loud and clear. It is an interesting book furthering the debate for a more caring and inclusive health system and worth a read - Kanuru Sujatha Rao, Former Secretary, Ministry of Health, Government of India

The healthcare scenario has changed a lot in the past few years, due to massive developments in technology, and the unscrupulous commercialization of Healthcare. It is evident that a balance between primary, secondary and tertiary care is essential to achieve UHC. However, the book ‘Mission Possible’ brings new, comprehensive, and necessary value addition to the road towards UHC. This book is logical, evidenced based and easy to read - Rev. Dr. Mathew Abraham, Director General, The Catholic Health Association of India

This book has taken a complex issue and delved into each lever that has either a positive or a negative influence. A paradigm shift in thinking and allowing time for newer ways of healthcare delivery to take its roots needs committed leadership at the political, executive and provider level. As a practicing health care professional this book educated me on the macro and micro factors that have an influence on healthcare delivery. Universal Health Coverage is the Holy Grail that has been elusive for too long. Having this solid road map and a willingness to genuinely try is what is the need of the hour. Thank you for having the courage and conviction to address such a complex problem - Dr. S Aravind, Chief Medical Officer, Aravind Eye Hospital

The holy grail of healthcare is to achieve universal coverage that can make quality healthcare affordable and accessible to all irrespective of their geographic location or economic status. For a long time, this has been assumed to be “Mission Impossible.” This book, aptly titled “Mission Possible” analyzes the entire healthcare ecosystem to say why Universal Health Coverage may not be beyond our means - Dr. Sumanth Raman, medical professional, television and media personality, author, and founder of Algorithm Health

An Idea Starter for Change Makers:
I picked up Mission Possible: Paving the Road to Universal Health Coverage by Swami Subramaniam and Aparajithan Srivathsan just to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by India’s healthcare system. While this book primarily targets policymakers and industry veterans, I discovered that it offers far more than that.
As I raced through this well-crafted narrative, I found it to be a treasure trove of ideas for solving population-scale problems across various domains.
Here’s my take:
This isn’t just a book for healthcare enthusiasts—it’s an idea starter for entrepreneurs and startups aiming to make a significant impact by tackling large, societal-scale problems.
First, the authors dissect the inefficiencies in India’s healthcare system, from underfunded primary care to the rampant fraud that clogs the system. Yet, instead of merely pointing out flaws, they present these issues as golden opportunities for innovation—inviting entrepreneurs with the courage to turn pain points into breakthroughs.
For entrepreneurs, this book offers the perspective to transform complex, problem-ridden spaces into scalable solutions. The global perspective is particularly refreshing, as the authors draw inspiration from systems like the UK’s NHS and Canada’s healthcare model, urging entrepreneurs to adapt successful frameworks to India’s unique context.
Packed with actionable insights and frameworks, Mission Possible is a resource ready to be applied to underserved markets. It helps you understand how the various pieces of a problem interact, offering the secret sauce for creating real change.
Whether you're in healthcare, tech, or another industry, Mission Possible is a stimulating read on problem-solving at a macro level. If you’re an entrepreneur with big ambitions, I highly recommend reading it with a notebook in hand—it’s bound to get your mind whirring with ideas on turning systemic challenges into game-changing innovations.

A while ago, my good friend Srivathsan Aparajithan, with whom I’ve collaborated on health insurance projects, mentioned his book on a topic we've often discussed over coffee. Intrigued, I decided to read it and share my thoughts. Given our past conversations, I anticipated a balanced and pragmatic perspective, and the book delivered just that.

Co-authored with Swami Subramaniam, the book offers a well-rounded view of the current state and future possibilities of Universal Healthcare Coverage, approached from an 'ecosystem' perspective. It avoids overwhelming the reader with excessive data, focusing instead on straightforward analysis, challenging common misconceptions, and providing thought-provoking insights.

Considering the diverse healthcare setups and complexities in our country, the authors present a broadly applicable approach that resonates with the ecosystem's nuances. The authors have picked up a broad ‘best fit’ approach that appeals on an ecosystem basis rather than any micro solutions! The book’s clear narrative makes it a simple read for anyone looking to grasp the issues and opportunities surrounding Universal Health Coverage.
